The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) measures the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. It measures your listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks in English. Many Universities in Europe and other countries also accept TOEFL (IELTS is popular outside the USA). Most people who take the TOEFL test are planning to study at colleges and universities where instruction is in English. In addition, many government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency. In addition to the test, the TOEFL program provides tools and guides to help you prepare for the test and improve your English-language skills. The popularity of TOEFL is growing.

You can do the test on paper or on a computer, depending where you live. The test comes in two formats:

  1. Paper-based test (PBT)
  2. Next generation computer-based test (TOEFL iBT test)The Paper Based Test (PBT) is written on paper.

It is usually offered in countries or centres where the Internet Based Test (iBT) is not available. It is usually administered six times in a year.

The TOEFL iBT is used for:

  • Students planning to study at a higher education institution
  • English-language learning programme admissions and exit
  • Scholarship and certification candidates
  • English-language learners who want to track their progress
  • Students and workers applying for visas

There is no passing or failing TOEFL score; individual institutions and agencies set their own score requirements.

Who Accepts TOEFL iBT Test Scores?

More than 8,500, agencies and other institutions in over 130 countries accept the scores. It is the most popular English language proficiency in the world.

Your test scores will be considered together with other information you supply to the institution to determine if you have the appropriate academic and language background to be admitted to a regular or modified program of study. Often your field of study and whether you are applying as a graduate or undergraduate student will determine what scores you need.

Is there a Minimum Acceptable score?

Each institution that uses TOEFL scores sets its own minimum level of acceptable performance. These minimum scores vary from one institution to another, depending on factors such as the applicant’s field of study, the level of study (undergraduate or graduate), whether the applicant will be a teaching assistant, and whether the institution offers English as a Second Language support for its students.

How is the TOEFL iBT scored?

Thirty (30) points are allotted for each of the four sections of the TOEFL iBT. The total obtainable score is 120 points.

What are the sections in Internet Base Test (iBT)?

The IBT consists of a 6 hours test in 4 sections which covers:

Reading – students are given a reading passage and then posed questions about the content they have just read.

Listening – students are given a passage to listen only once and are asked questions about the conversation.

Speaking – students read passages and answer questions on a variety of subjects. These replies are digitally recorded and sent to exam judges to be tested.

Writing – students are given a passage and then asked to write a passage in response to the text.

The Test can take up to 6 hours to complete, and students are given optional 10 minute breaks.
